Context
This couple loved the feel and walkability of the Lower East Side neighborhood, but houses that come onto the market often sell quickly. After several years, the couple met a homeowner who was interested in selling and so they jumped at the opportunity to purchase this townhome.
Our team created a seamless space between the kitchen and dining room to bring more light and continuity to the first floor. The adjoining office was finished with a custom transom window and the reimagined floor-to-ceiling bookcases create a focal point and connection between rooms.
In 2023, this couple started a family and re-enlisted our team to add living space into the unfinished basement area. They wanted a family-friendly space, but also wanted it to have a sophisticated feel to entertain their friends.
This space is special for the brass inlay details; the marriage of the cigar-lounge, swanky vibe with an approachable, family-centric space.
Our team designed a motorized pocket door to hide the back part (think workout room & storage areas) of the basement from the entertaining spaces. Conceiving and planning for all the details to build and hide the motor and controls took extra consideration, but it's definitely a wow factor of this space. Also, the fireplace insert was flat, so we had to re-weld and re-powder coat the front face to handle the depth of the dimensional tile. The result is absolutely worth the extra steps.
Our team created an entirely new living area that perfectly suits both family and friends. This basement build is the trifecta blend of approachable, swanky, and comfortable--and in a neighborhood this couple can finally call home.
